Lessons

How long does a lesson last?
Usually lessons last either 30 minutes or 1 hour. Most people tend to start off with having 30 minute lessons.

What do I need to bring to my first lesson?
If you are a beginner, nothing! I will provide you with sticks to use during the lesson and you will have the opportunity to buy a pair at the end of the lesson to take home with you.
If you are not a beginner, then you need to bring your sticks with you. I would also like you to bring any books/learning materials that you have previously used.

As a beginner, do I need to buy a drum kit straight away?
No, it is not necessary to buy a drum kit straight away. It is a substantial investment and so I would not expect you to spend the money on a drum kit before you have had enough lessons to decide you are going to make a commitment to learning.
Having said that, I would say that after about 6 - 8 weeks of lessons, your progress will be affected if you do not have an instrument to practice on in between lessons.
Exams

Do you prepare students for taking drum exams?
Yes, I currently have students taking exams with the different available syllabuses - Rockschool and Trinity Rock&Pop are the most popular choices.

Do I have to do exams If I have lessons with you?
Not at all - I am happy to teach without the use of grade exams. I would say though, that the grades often help provide a motivation, particularly for the younger students.
They don't even necessarily have to take the exam, but some of the students just enjoy learning the pieces/working through the books and feel the accomplishment of completing one grade book and then moving on to the next level!

What is your current exam success rate?
100% of my students who have been entered for an exam have passed with no lower than either a MERIT or a DISTINCTION.

Yes I am. I teach in three different schools and have had an enhanced DBS check performed for each one and can provide documentation to show this.
